UN experts lack authority to conduct inquiries into alleged war crimes in Africa — Lavrov

The top diplomat stressed that only the UN Security Council had such powers

BAMAKO /Mali/, February 7. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that UN experts are not empowered to investigate war crimes, whoever may have committed them.

This is how he responded to calls by UN experts for conducting investigations of human rights violations in Mali and their concern about the activities of PMC Wagner in this regard.

"As for some UN experts who are said to be making inquiries into alleged war crimes by the Wagner private military company, I can say that I know nothing about any UN experts empowered to consider any aspects of war crimes, whoever may have committed them," Lavrov told a news conference on Tuesday.

He stressed that only the UN Security Council had such powers.
