MOSCOW, August 23. /TASS/. The agreements on Syria that were reached at the Tehran summit in the Astana format on July 19, 2022 are being fully implemented, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday.
"The agreements are being implemented in full," he said at a news conference following talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Moscow. "At the summit in Tehran on July 19, a joint statement was adopted by the three presidents (Russia, Iran and Turkey - TASS). It’s an open document that clearly confirms respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity of Syria, the prevention of any actions to encourage separatist tendencies, and other steps that violate UN Security Council Resolution 2254."
He said the statement also declares the ongoing Israeli strikes on Syrian territory as unacceptable and contains the tasks that the participants of the mechanism of international meetings on Syria are faced with. Eighteen such meetings have already been held. They mainly concerned the promotion of an intra-Syrian dialogue and the creation of conditions for the productive work of the Constitutional Committee of Syria.
All these issues, according to Lavrov, are considered on a regular basis by foreign ministers, defense ministers, and other experts of the three countries. In addition, the Russian minister said, during bilateral meetings such as today's, the parties "pay attention to the practical steps that are necessary in order to fully implement the agreements" of the presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey.
"This subject, of course, was one of the main ones during the recent visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Russia, when he held detailed talks with the president of Russia. And the same subject will be a centerpiece during my next meeting with the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is expected in the near future," Lavrov said.
