SCO states to make effective use of region’s transit potential

The participants of the meeting consider it important to create new routes as well as upgrade existing international routes for motor and railroad transportation, multimodal transport corridors and logistics centers

BEIJING, November 1. /TASS/. The authorities of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) member-states intend to make effective use of the transit potential of the region and beef up the transport interconnectedness across the organization, according to a joint communique approved on Tuesday after the 21st meeting of the Council of SCO Heads of Governments.

"The heads of delegations confirmed the intention of member-states to effectively use the SCO’s transit potential, the formation of regional transport and transit corridors, the implementation of large projects facilitating transport cohesiveness across the organization," the document said.

The participants of the meeting consider it important to create new routes as well as upgrade existing international routes for motor and railroad transportation, multimodal transport corridors and logistics centers, as well as introduce digital, innovative and energy-efficient technology, optimize transborder procedures and implement joint infrastructure projects.

They also noted Uzbekistan’s proposal to hold the SCO Transport forum there in 2023 and to create a UN-sponsored Interregional center on interconnectivity in Tashkent.

The SCO is an international organization founded in 2001. It currently contains Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Another four countries, including Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia, have observer status. Moreover, nine countries are dialogue partners, among them Azerbaijan, Armenia, Egypt, Cambodia, Qatar, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Sri Lanka.
