Kiev to get more advanced Abrams tanks, but without secret armor — report

On the outside the tanks look like the older A1 version but they have more sophisticated optics and controls

WASHINGTON, January 26. /TASS/. The US plans to provide Kiev with a more advanced version of Abrams tanks, but without classified armor packages, which include depleted uranium, Politico reported on Thursday, citing sources.

Kiev is set to receive the tanks in their more advanced M1A2 configuration, according to the report. On the outside the tanks look like the older A1 version but they have more sophisticated optics and controls. The digitized controls of the M1A2 allow the tanks to exchange information continuously and automatically. Their lates technology also allows the vehicles to rapidly identify enemy positions.

However, US federal rules forbid exporting Abrams tanks with classified armor packages utilized by the US military, Politico said. The packages include depleted-uranium armor, meaning the tanks destined for Ukraine won’t have the secret armor that enhances their capabilities.
