China warns of harsh retaliation if Pelosi visits Taiwan

This visit would be considered by Beijing as a violation of the one-China principle and related US-Chinese agreements, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council Ma Xiaoguang stressed

BEIJING, April 7. /TASS/. China will deliver a harsh retaliatory blow in the event that US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Thursday.

"We will deliver a harsh retaliatory blow and will firmly defend China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said in a statement.

Pelosi’s visit would be considered by Beijing as a violation of the one-China principle and related US-Chinese agreements, the official said.

Japan’s Fuji-TV earlier reported that Pelosi planned to travel to Taiwan in the next few days. She plans to come to Japan on April 8 where she will meet with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Afterward, she will head to Taipei in what will be the first visit of the island by a House of Representatives speaker in 25 years.
