China strongly opposes all forms of official contacts between US and Taiwan

Earlier, it was reported about a possible visit by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan

BEIJING, April 7. /TASS/. China resolutely objects to all forms of official contacts between the United States and Taiwan, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Thursday, commenting on reports about a possible visit by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

"China holds an unwavering stance against any forms of official contacts between the United States and Taiwan," he emphasized.

The Chinese diplomat stressed that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, would seriously violate the principle of ‘One China’ and the provisions of three Chinese-US joint communiques. Besides, it would inflict great damage on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China and would deliver a blow to the political basis of bilateral relations, while sending a false signal to separatist forces seeking "Taiwan’s independence."

"China announced its resolute protest and has already voiced its strong objection to the American side," Zhao Lijian added.

Japan’s Fuji-TV channel reported on Thursday that US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi intended to pay an official visit to Taiwan. According to the broadcaster, Pelosi intended to come to Japan on April 8, hold a meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and to then set off to Taiwan. Her visit may be the first one by a US House of Representatives speaker in over 25 years.
