ST. PETERSBURG, November 17. /TASS/. One of the reasons for the current tensions around the world is certain forces’ claims to exceptionalism, including cultural exclusivity, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum - Forum of United Cultures.
"Among the key reasons for the present tensions worldwide are precisely the claim of certain forces to exceptionalism, including cultural exclusivity, their disregard for other customs and religious values, as well as their determination to put everyone and everything under unification, what is more, in accordance with their own pattern, which they believe to be the best and most universal," the president said.
"Such vulgar globalization and, I will add, cultural expansion resulted in the suppression and impoverishment of cultures and dramatically multiplied the conflict potential," Putin stressed.
The Russian president pointed out that, for its part, Russia cherishes the languages and traditions of all ethnic groups inhabiting it and showcases the unique unity of numerous indigenous cultures.
"The experience of our country’s history spanning a thousand of years convincingly proves that cultural diversity is the ultimate blessing, while the collaboration of cultures is one of the conditions for a stable and peaceful growth," he said.
The president referred to St. Petersburg, which hosts the international cultural forum, as an example. According to Putin, this city is one of the visible embodiments of the Russians’ compassion and ability to comprehend, accept and develop the best things.
"It is not about emphasizing the differences, but about finding common ground, elevating to the height of mutual religious enrichment, and moving forward together," the president said.
The 9th St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum is held on November 16-18. The Forum has been organized by Russia’s government and Culture Ministry, along with the St. Petersburg authorities and the State Hermitage Museum. TASS is serving as the Forum’s general information partner, official press center operator and official photo host agency.
