NEW YORK, April 4. /TASS/. Former US President Donald Trump has been formally arrested, CNN reported Tuesday.

Trump will be in custody until charges are filed against him. It is expected that Trump will be able to leave the courthouse freely after the hearing.

In US procedural law, an arrest is an obligatory part of a grand jury indictment. The arrest does not mean that Trump will be behind bars. The defendant remains under arrest only for the duration of the indictment.

Earlier, Trump was spared the formalities of a typical arrest. He was not handcuffed or photographed for case materials, and his fingerprints were taken earlier.

Trump remains in the prosecutor’s office while the arrest-related paperwork is being processed. Relevant information should be handed over to local law enforcement. It is also presumed that he would be reminded about his right to remain silent and that his words could be used against him. The media does not have access to him at this stage of the indictment.

US President Joe Biden is not focusing his attention on the charges brought against ex-US President Donald Trump but US authorities are ready for a possible upheaval, White House Spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said at a briefing on Tuesday.

She declined to comment on the matter, specifically saying that Biden "is going to focus on the American people like he does every day," while Trump’s case was not his focus.

According to the White House official, the administration was ready for a potential uproar.
