Russian sailors rescue Frenchman, dog from distressed yacht in Atlantic

The man was identified as Lucas Monteoux, who was solo-sailing across the Atlantic

MOSCOW, January 31. /TASS/. A French national whose yacht was wrecked in the Atlantic Ocean has been rescued by Russian sailors, the Russian defense ministry said on Tuesday.

"The crew of the Kama tanker from the Russian Northern Fleet battle force, which was on a long-distance voyage in the central part of the Atlantic Ocean, received a distress signal from a yacht. The Kama tanker deviated from its course and headed to the wreckage area," the ministry said, adding that a man and his dog were rescued from the yacht.

The man was identified as Lucas Monteoux, who was solo-sailing across the Atlantic. A storm damaged the yacht’s steering gear and the yacht began to leak water. After an unsuccessful attempt to fix the problem, he sent a distress signal.
