Security Council needs to adopt resolution calling for Mideast ceasefire — Russian envoy

"We expect that the work on it will begin soon," he said

UNITED NATIONS, November 16. /TASS/. Russia hopes that the UN Security Council will adopt a full-featured and strong resolution that contains an unequivocal call for an immediate ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said.

"What remains a priority is the adoption of a full-fledged, strong product of the Council with an unambiguous call for an immediate ceasefire. We trust that work on it will begin very soon," the Russian diplomat said, addressing the UN Security Council which just adopted a resolution on the Middle East.

A total of 12 countries in the 15-member council voted in favor of the document, aimed at helping children in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone. The United States, the United Kingdom and Russia abstained.

According to Nebenzya, the document "will not contribute to resolving the humanitarian crisis in which the Gaza Strip and its population find themselves."

"We trust that the Secretary-General will report on the implementation of the resolution at the next meeting of the Security Council on the Middle East and present the Council with options for establishing mechanisms for international monitoring of the process as soon as possible," the Russian envoy added.

"The Council needs to decide on further actions - what observers to send to the conflict zone and what United Nations contingent will be involved. We will follow this closely and will not allow this issue to be bogged down," he concluded.
