Russia has issues with COP27’s draft final document, envoy says

We received the draft of the final document and we would like to comment on a number of aspects, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Ruslan Edelgeriyev said

CAIRO, November 17. /TASS/. Russia has a number of comments on the draft final document of the COP27 UN Climate Change Conference, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Ruslan Edelgeriyev, who heads Russia’s delegation to the event, told TASS on Thursday.

"We received the draft of the final document and we would like to comment on a number of aspects. First of all, the changes to the text of the Paris Agreement are discouraging, as the changes were neither discussed nor agreed to by anyone. For example, 2050 as a universal deadline for achieving carbon neutrality, the need to peak emissions by 2030, and the use of certain energy sources are being actively imposed. Russia is interested in fighting against climate change but it’s important to develop joint actions in a transparent manner so that it’s not the result of backroom games," the Russian delegation’s head noted.

According to Egelgeriyev, Russia intends to defend the inclusion of a separate paragraph on support for developing countries in the summit’s final document.

The COP27 summit is taking place in Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh from November 6-18. Hundreds of events have already been held as part of the forum. According to sources in Sharm El-Sheikh, there is friction between the summit’s participants on its final document. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, who is the COP27 president, said earlier on Thursday that some issues remained unresolved in certain areas.
