MOSCOW, October 20. /TASS/. Russia is closely following the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and intends to strengthen comprehensive political and economic cooperation with the country, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday.
"We are closely following the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China. According to Chinese representatives, it is meant to predetermine the path of the party, the Chinese state building for the next five years. It is gratifying that friendly China has made significant progress in state-building and socio-economic development, and that China's prestige in the global affairs is steadily growing," she said. "We intend to further strengthen comprehensive political, economic, humanitarian cooperation with China and coordination in the international arena, which we regularly do," the diplomat added.
About the Congress
The 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China kicked off at the Great Hall of the People at the Tiananmen Square in downtown Beijing and will continue until October 22. Nearly 2,300 delegates to the forum, representing 96.7 million members of the ruling party, will discuss the results of the past five years and approve the goals and objectives of China's development for the next five-year period.
During the congress, delegates will elect new members of the CPC Central Committee and the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection as well as consider amendments to the Communist Party Charter.
