Cuba starts accepting Russian Mir payment system cards

It was also mentioned that the geography of card usage will gradually expand

MOSCOW, December 5. /TASS/. Cuba now accepts Russian Mir payment cards at POS terminals, the National Payment System press service reported.

"POS terminals in Cuba now accept Russian Mir payment system cards. First and foremost, the network is being expanded in the most popular tourist destinations, such as Havana and Varadero. Tourists from Russia can now use Mir cards to pay in stores, hotels, restaurants, and other commercial and service establishments throughout the country," the statement said.

It was also mentioned that the geography of card usage will gradually expand.

"We know that after it becomes possible to withdraw cash from Mir cards at local ATMs, tourists waited to use our cards everywhere in Cuba. Now they can use them to pay at virtually all terminals in Varadero and Havana resorts, just as they would at home. And in the near future, we will work with our partners to ensure that our cards are accepted throughout Cuba. Payments with Russian cards are made at the rate set by the Mir payment system. We're trying to make it as viable as possible," Head of the National Payment System Vladimir Komlev said.

In March 2023, cash withdrawals from Mir cards became available across the entire ATM network in Cuba. During this time, Russian tourists took advantage of this opportunity about 3,000 times.
