Italy to remain ‘NATO’s reliable partner’, continue support for Ukraine, assures new PM

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her government were sworn in on Saturday

ROME, October 25. /TASS/. Rome will continue to be ‘NATO’s reliable partner’, even on further supporting Ukraine, Italy’s new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday in her keynote speech in the Italian parliament’s lower chamber.

"Italy will remain NATO’s reliable partner, starting with its support for the brave Ukrainian people," she said. Meloni stressed that her country remained "a full-fledged part of the West and its allies".

According to her, Europe needs a "more efficient integration to jointly face big challenges".

Meloni earlier stressed that her government would uphold national interests, but at the same time would adhere to the EU and NATO line, especially in relations with Russia.

Prime Minister Meloni and her government were sworn in on Saturday.

Both chambers of the Italian parliament have to hold a vote of confidence, preceded by the new prime minister’s keynote speech, to finalize the accession of the new premier and government. The voting in the lower chamber is scheduled to take place on Tuesday evening, while the vote in the Senate (the upper chamber) will be held on Wednesday.
