Nikolayev to turn off traffic lights for energy saving, mayor says

Alexander Senkevich asked locals to reduce electricity consumption as much as possible between 7:00 am and 11:00 pm

KIEV, October 20. /TASS/. Traffic lights will be switched off in the Ukrainian city of Nikolayev for energy saving purposes, and electric vehicle traffic will be cut by 60%, Mayor Alexander Senkevich announced on Thursday.

"Friends, we will be cutting electric vehicle traffic on streets of Nikolayev by 60%. And we will also switch off traffic lights," Ukrainian news agency UNN quoted Senkevich as saying. The Nikolayev mayor also asked locals to reduce electricity consumption as much as possible between 7:00 am and 11:00 pm.

The Nikolayev Region’s military administration chief Vitaly Kim said on Wednesday evening that factories would be idled and the illumination of stores would be switched off across the region on Thursday. He also called on residents and the military in the region to save energy.

Earlier, the Ukrainian presidential office said the country would switch to rolling blackouts from Thursday.
