Russia suggests strengthening UN mechanism for biological, chemical weapons

UN General Assembly committees consider resolutions proposed by the member countries in October-November

UNITED NATIONS, October 19. /TASS/. Russia has addressed the UN General Assembly’s first committee with a proposal for adopting a resolution to strengthen the mechanism of the UN Secretary-General for investigating cases of suspected use of chemical and biological weapons, the deputy director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s arms control and non-proliferation department, Konstantin Vorontsov, has said.

"Russia reaffirms its interest in strengthening the expert and technical potential of the UN Secretary General’s mechanism of investigating cases of suspected use of chemical and biological weapons and intends to continue to contribute to the world community’s common efforts. In order to effectively use the mechanisms of the Secretary-General Russia submits a draft of the corresponding resolution. We ask for its support and co-authorship," he said.

UN General Assembly committees consider resolutions proposed by the member countries in October-November. If approved, they are submitted to the General Assembly for discussion.
