Turkish military neutralize naval mine near Black Sea coast — Defense Ministry

This is the first time a mine was discovered near the Turkish coast since the Istanbul grain deal has entered into effect on July 22

ANKARA, October 19. /TASS/. The Turkish Navy special operations forces neutralized a naval mine in the Black Sea near the city of Kirklareli, the Turkish Defense Ministry tweeted Wednesday.

"After detection of a naval mine in the Black Sea in the Kiyikoy/Kirklareli region, Underwater Defense (SAS) unites were promptly dispatched to its location. The mine was neutralized safely," the Ministry tweeted.

This is the first time a mine was discovered near the Turkish coast since the Istanbul grain deal has entered into effect on July 22. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said in July that Turkish Navy ships, naval aviation, drones and special forces were mobilized to combat the mines. Special radars were deployed near the Bosphorus Strait.

In March, Russian Federal Security Service warned that naval mines, deployed in the Black Sea by the Ukrainian navy may drift towards Bosphorus due to rupture of tethers. The exact number of mines is unknown but it believed that there are several hundreds of them.
