Russian Federation Council approves decree on martial law in new regions

It is reported that the decision was made unanimously, with 159 senators voting in favor

MOSCOW, October 19. /TASS/. The Federation Council of Russia approved President Vladimir Putin’s decree on declaration of martial law in Donetsk and Lugansk People’s republics and Zaporozhye and Kherson regions Wednesday.

The decision was made unanimously, with 159 senators voting in favor.

According to Viktor Bondarev, head of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, the decision to declare martial law in the new regions was timely.

"We believe that the decision made by the President of Russia is correct, timely and will lead to faster achievement of the set goals and end of the special military operation," Bondarev said.

He added that the Federation Council decision on approval of the presidential decree will be forwarded to the head of state immediately.

Earlier on Wednesday, Putin announced that he signed a decree on declaration of martial law in the four new regions of Russia. Under the Russian Constitution, a declaration of martial law must be approved by the Federation Council.
