Germany warns about flight ticket price hike over events in Ukraine

Kerosene prices are growing, but infrastructure expenses are increasing as well, BDL head Peter Gerber said

BERLIN, April 18. /TASS/. German Aviation Association (BDL) warned the Germans about a flight ticket price hike that could be caused by the energy embargo against Russia over the situation in Ukraine, BDL head Peter Gerber said in an interview Monday.

He explained that the German aviation industry would "face restrictions and higher prices" amid cessation of Russian oil supply. In particular, Gerber warned, German customers must be ready for increase of flight ticket prices.

"I predict that it will become more expensive to fly. Kerosene prices are growing, but infrastructure expenses are increasing as well," he underscored.

However, he opined that German aviation industry will be able to cope with the hardships, caused by cessation of oil import from Russia. In particular, he noted that most oil used by the industry is already coming to North Sea ports.

"Therefore, the embargo should not cause big losses," Gerber believes.

He also noted that, while a complete shutdown of the Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt is unlikely, one should not rule out anything.

In conclusion, the official said that, even despite the events in Ukraine, he expects that high demand for flights will remain.

"If we look at the market in general, the desire to travel does not disappear," he concluded.
