NATO was initially designed as machine to deter Russia, says Kremlin spokesman

When NATO was set up in 1949, it was in fact designed as a machine to suppress the Soviet Union, Dmitry Peskov said

MOSCOW, November 4. /TASS/. The goal of establishing NATO was originally in containing and suppressing Russia, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at the Znanie (Knowledge) educational marathon at the International RUSSIA EXPO.

"The <…> North Atlantic Alliance, or NATO - when it was set up in 1949, it was in fact designed as a machine to suppress the Soviet Union, a machine to deter our country," he said.

"I do not separate Russia from the Soviet Union, because we are legal successors," Peskov said.
