Hezbollah vows not to fight on Iran's side if war resumes — Lebanese parliament speaker

Nabih Berri said this position had been conveyed to Lebanese President Joseph Aoun

BEIRUT, October 26. /TASS/. Hezbollah vows not to fight against Israel should another spiral of confrontation between Iran and the United States break out, Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri said.

"This time, Hezbollah will not be drawn into the conflict on Iran's side. This position has been conveyed to President Joseph Aoun," he said, as cited by the Naharnet news portal.

Since the outbreak of the military escalation on March 2, 2026, Berri has been acting as a mediator between Hezbollah and the Lebanese government. Sources close to him told the news portal that Hezbollah’s decision to stay away from the war stems from the desperate situation the Shiite community in southern Lebanon is in following Israeli bombings. Such a step may be met negatively by the organization’s electorate, so it has to act cautiously, they explained.

According to the pan-Arabic newspaper Asharq Al Awsat, Hezbollah’s decision was agreed on with the Iranian leadership. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh, who visited Beirut on October 14-16, reportedly told Berri that Tehran would not insist on Hezbollah’s entering a conflict that is clearly unequal amid the aggressive threats from US President Donald Trump.

Iran "is capable of fighting back on its own and has made significant progress in preparing for a new attack to prevent the enemy from achieving its objectives," Khatibzadeh was quoted as saying.
