MINSK, March 1. /TASS/. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko believes that the tensions in Eastern Europe escalated because of total ignoring of the system of security by the West.

"The total ignoring of the system of security by the West, the leveling of the system of checks and balances, achieved with difficulties after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, degradation and devaluation of international treaties and agreements has led to the escalation of the military and political situation in our region," Lukashenko told Belarusian Security Council, according to BelTA.

The Belarusian leader also said about an unending "intense militarization, especially in Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania."

"Funding of national armed forces has long surpassed the NATO requirement of 2% of GDP. The US itself increased its military budget in 2022 by almost 4% (almost $770 billion), while Ukraine increased its military spending to 6% of its GDP," the Belarusian president said.
