Accusations against Raul Castro legally null and void — Russian Foreign Ministry

Maria Zakharova emphasized that it had been confirmed by a UN Security Council resolution adopted 30 years ago

MOSCOW, October 26. /TASS/. The charges brought against Cuba’s former leader Raul Castro are not legally credible, as has already been clearly stated by Russia and confirmed by a UN Security Council resolution adopted 30 years ago saying that the incident currently being blamed on Castro was resolved, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

Responding to a request to clarify how the 1996 UN Security Council resolution was adopted, which the Russian foreign ministry had previously referred to in a statement in connection with the United States’ issuance of an arrest warrant for Castro, the diplomat said that Russia’s and the United States’ permanent representatives to the United Nations played the most active role in intensive consultations, thanks to whom a statement satisfying all parties, which "did not contain any personal accusations, much less calls for measures to bring anyone to justice" was produced.

"Subsequently, the approach proposed in the statement formed the basis for the aforementioned UN Security Council resolution S/RES/1067 (1996) dated July 26, 1996. This effectively meant that all members of the Council agreed that the incident was resolved. We recall this episode of Russian-American cooperation at the UN precisely to emphasize the legal insignificance of the charges currently being leveled against Cuba’s historical leader Raul Castro," Zakharova said. "We clearly stated this in the statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on October 20."
