Putin congratulates Nepomnyashchy upon victory in World Blitz Chess Championship

The Russian president wished the chess player strong health, success and good fortune in 2025

MOSCOW, January 1. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated chess player Yan Nepomnyashchy on his victory in the World Blitz Chess Championship in New York.

"Your performance was excellent throughout the contest. In the final you showed remarkable self-control and firm determination to win. You deservedly earned the world title, sharing this honorable award with the experienced Magnus Carlsen. Well done!" Putin’s message reads.

He wished Nepomnyashchy strong health, success and good fortune in 2025.

Nepomnyashchy and Carlsen shared first place at the World Blitz Championship. They played four games in each round of the playoffs. In the final match, Carlsen won the first two games, but then Nepomnyashchy celebrated success twice in a row. The next three additional games were tied. The Norwegian contestant offered his Russian counterpart to share the world title. Later, the press service of the International Chess Federation announced that for the first time ever two grandmasters would become world blitz champions.
