Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin met in Moscow with UN Secretary General’s special envoy for Sudan Ramtane Lamamra, the sides discussed the current situation in this country and Russia’s readiness to help establish peace in Sudan, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"[The sides] pointed to the importance of the UN’s coordinating role in observing the principles of impartiality and neutrality. The Russian side has confirmed its readiness to help establish peace in Sudan," the ministry said in a statement.
The sides also discussed the current situation "on the ground," "pointing to the need for an early ceasefire and the resumption of the inclusive intra-Sudanese dialogue with the participation of all influential political forces and ethnic and religious groups of Sudan." "The sides paid special attention to the efforts of the UN on the Sudanese direction, as well to the recent contacts of Lamamra with the Sudanese and leading international and regional players," the ministry pointed out.
