Survivors of Embraer 190 crash near Aktau were seated in the tail section of the plane

ASTANA, December 25. /TASS/. Most of the survivors of the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane crash near Aktau were in the rear of the plane, the 24.kg news agency reports.

According to the report, 16 passengers who were seated in the front part of the plane were thrown outside immediately after the impact. The people who sat in the middle died inside the cabin.

Photos, provided by the Emergencies Ministry of Kazakhstan, indicate that the plane’s registration number was 4K-AZ65. According to the russianplanes.net website, this plane, dubbed Gusar, had been in use for 11.5 years since its commissioning in 2013. Between 2017 and 2023, it flew in the Buta Airways livery (an Azerbaijan Airlines sub-brand). Its current state is listed as "crashed."

The 24.kz news agency notes that the crashed Embraer 190 was a regional passenger plane and part of Embraer’s E-Jet family, first presented in 2004.

This plane has a good safety reputation, but several incidents have occurred previously. In 2007, a JetBlue Airways plane suffered a brake failure but landed successfully. In 2011, Aerosvit Airlines lost an Embraer 190 due to pilot error. In 2018, an Embraer 190 had a system failure that caused an emergency landing, but the investigation did not find any structural defects.

The Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190, flying from Baku to Grozny, crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday. According to the latest reports, the plane carried 69 people, mainly citizens of Azerbaijan, as well as citizens of Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. According to the Prosecutor’s Office of Azerbaijan, 32 people survived.
