Nicaraguan authorities to purchase three vaccines against coronavirus, including Sputnik V

Pfizer and BioNTech are not suitable for Nicaragua since they should be stored at a temperature of 70 degrees below zero, as the republic does not have the equipment to provide such storage conditions

MEXICO CITY, January 14. /TASS/. Nicaraguan authorities consider purchasing three vaccines against the coronavirus, including the Russian Sputnik V preparation, Vice President of the republic Rosario Murillo reported.

"We took action in order to purchase these vaccines <...> We propose to purchase 3 vaccines, first Sputnik V by the Russian Federation, as well as AstraZeneca and Covaxin by Indian [Bharat Biotech]," the 100% Noticias internet media outlet quoted her as saying. The vice president didn’t specify the details of the upcoming purchase yet noted that the government’s goal is to inoculate the entire population of the country.

She pointed out that vaccines by Pfizer and BioNTech are not suitable for Nicaragua since they should be stored at a temperature of 70 degrees below zero. The Central American republic does not have the equipment to provide such storage conditions.

It is notable that in 2019, the Russian-Nicaraguan Mechnikov joint venture launched production of flu vaccines in the republic. It is the only biotechnological enterprise in Central America built in accordance with the requirements of international production standards and quality control of pharmaceuticals.
