New START extension a serious diplomatic success, says Deputy Foreign Minister

The Deputy Foreign Minister added that Russia expects a dialogue with the US on strategic stability

MOSCOW, January 27. /TASS/. The achievement of agreement on the New START Treaty extension is a serious diplomatic success, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Wednesday.

"The point of the agreement is to extend the treaty as is, without amendments and additions, in accordance with the part 2 of Clause 14, for five years - until February 5, 2026. It was said correctly and precisely that this fully, 100% corresponds to the Russian position. And this can be considered a serious diplomatic success," he said.

Ryabkov pointed out that the new White House administration exercised "certain pragmatism and reasonable approach" in this regard.

The Deputy Foreign Minister added that Russia expects a dialogue with the US on strategic stability.

"We consider it necessary to pay special attention to the means used to carry out the initial strike in order to neutralize or weaken the deterrence potential of another country," the senior diplomat said.

Last Tuesday, Russia and the US exchanged diplomatic notes on the New START extension. In its note, the US Embassy in Russia proposed to extend the Treaty in accordance with its clauses. In response, Russian Foreign Minister confirmed the "acceptability of this proposal for the Russian Federation." Presidents of the two countries expressed their satisfaction over this fact during a phone call the same day.
