Two Russian women killed in Seoul stampede — Russian Embassy

As specified in the consular department of the Russian Embassy in South Korea, the deceased was a young woman

SEOUL, October 30. /TASS/. South Korean authorities told the Russian Embassy in Seoul on Sunday that two Russian citizens were killed in a stampede in downtown Seoul during Halloween celebrations on Saturday night.

"We were told that another young woman was killed. As of now, there are already two people [from Russia killed]," head of the consular department Denis Abdrashikov told a TASS correspondent.

Another Russian national was injured. The diplomat added that the search for her was underway. Her sister said she had no documents with her which complicates the situation. Earlier, the consular department noted that it maintained contact with her relatives who were looking for the young woman at Seoul hospitals.

According to recent data, 151 people, including 19 foreigners, were killed in the stampede in the Itaewon district and 82 were injured.

According to police estimates, about 100,000 people poured into a jam-packed narrow street in Itaewon on Saturday celebrating Halloween without pandemic-related restrictions for the first time in three years. The district, located near a US military base, is popular with young people as an area with numerous bars, restaurants and nightclubs. According to reports, most casualties are among people under 30 years of age.
