Russia's government supports IMEI registration of mobile devices — official

The government has not yet received the bill on registration of devices, an official added

PERM, January 25. /TASS/. The government supports registration of all mobile devices in Russia having Internet access by the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) but is against charging a fee for that, Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov told reporters on Friday.

"We have just discussed that with Minister [of Telecommunication Konstantin Noskov]. We do not support the idea of collecting fees, we support the idea of registration," Akimov said.

The government has not yet received the bill on registration of devices, he added.

In December 2018, the Council of Federation prepared the bill on introduction of a system for control of telephones and tablets by IMEI, which contemplates that only devices with authorized numbers will be allowed for registration in the communication operator networks. A centralized database is suggested to be established for this purpose. If a device has no IMEI or it coincides with the number of any other gadget, the network access for such device should be suspended, just as for stolen or lost phones, the bill detailed.
