Trump could have faced life in prison had he lost election, says J.D. Vance

The US Vice President-elect noted that persecution against Trump has always been political

NEW YORK, November 27. /TASS/. US President-elect Donald Trump would have most likely spent the rest of his life behind bars had he not won the US presidential election in November, opined US Vice President-elect J.D. Vance.

"If Donald J. Trump had lost an election, he may very well have spent the rest of his life in prison," he wrote on the X social network. Vance also noted that persecution against Trump has always been political.

Earlier, Steven Cheung, Communications Director of Trump’s transition team, said that the US Department of Justice had dropped all federal cases against the president-elect. Federal charges against Trump centered on alleged interference in the 2020 election and mishandling of classified documents.

Meanwhile, on Monday, US Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a motion with a federal court to halt proceedings over Trump’s alleged January 2021 attempt to remain in power despite losing the US presidential election.

If presiding US district judge Tanya Chutkan satisfies the motion, prosecutors will have the opportunity to try Trump anew after he leaves office.
