China highly appreciates Russia’s stance on Taiwan — Foreign Ministry

Spokeswoman Mao Ning also reiterated that the "'One China' principle is the shared consensus of the international community and the fundamental norm of foreign affairs"

BEIJING, November 25. /TASS/. China strongly values Russia’s position on Taiwan and opposes the use of the Taiwan issue to contain Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a news briefing.

Commenting on remarks by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko in an interview with TASS that "the Taiwan issue is exclusively in China’s purview," the diplomat emphasized that "China greatly appreciates Russia’s commitment to the 'One China' principle and opposes any attempts to use Taiwan to contain China."

She also reiterated that the "'One China' principle is the shared consensus of the international community and the fundamental norm of foreign affairs."

Taiwan has been governed by its local administration since 1949, when the remaining Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled to the island after being defeated in China’s civil war. Since then, Taiwan has retained the flag and some other symbols of the Republic of China that had existed on the mainland before the Communists came to power. Beijing regards the island as one of its provinces, and this position is supported by most countries, including Russia.
