Moldovan authorities suggest holding referendum on potential EU accession on October 20

The lawmakers asked the Constitutional Court to check the legality of amending the constitution based on the results of the referendum

CHISINAU, April 9. /TASS/. Moldova’s ruling Party of Action and Solidarity has suggested holding a referendum on the country’s EU accession on October 20, according to a corresponding draft parliamentary resolution published on the website of the Constitutional Court.

"The Constitutional referendum is scheduled for October 20," the document said.

The lawmakers asked the Constitutional Court to check the legality of amending the constitution based on the results of the referendum. According to the document, it is proposed to add the following words to the preamble of the Basic Law: "Recognizing the European identity of the Moldovan people, proclaiming integration into the European Union as a strategic goal of the Republic of Moldova". It is also proposed to add a paragraph to the Constitution introducing "the precedence of the EU regulations over the conflicting provisions of the domestic laws." It is noted that the accession to the EU treaties will be carried out following a parliamentary law.
