Chinese Foreign Ministry: US nuclear deterrence built on double standards

A senior US administration official earlier said that Washington would continue to rely on nuclear deterrence to counter potential threats from China and Russia

BEIJING, January 17. /TASS/. The United States is guided by double standards as far as strategic weapons go, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a briefing on Thursday, commenting on reports that Washington’s new missile defense strategy saw nuclear deterrence as the best way to deter Russia and China.

"We have many times heard the United States demand other countries limit their weapons research. At the same time, the US says that it will continue to develop weapons of mass destruction. It is double standards," Hua Chunying pointed out.

"We hope that as the strongest world power and one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, the United States will work together with other permanent members of the UN Security Council to promote global peace and stability," she added.

A senior US administration official earlier told a special briefing, dedicated to the upcoming release of a revamped US missile defense strategy, that Washington would continue to rely on nuclear deterrence to counter potential threats from China and Russia.
