Russia to assume UN Security Council chairmanship on September 1

The main event of Russia’s month-long chairmanship will be an open ministerial meeting on peace and security, conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa and the the terrorist threat

MOSCOW, August 27. /TASS/. Russia is taking over the UN Security Council chairmanship on September 1, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told a press briefing on Thursday.

"The work of the UN Security Council in the coming month will be intensive," the diplomat said. "This is the normal regime for the UN Security Council, considering open sessions of the General Assembly and general political debates." Zakharova also recalled that the UN marked its 70th anniversary this year. She noted that the celebrations would "bring together a large number of heads of state and top diplomats from around the world."

"The main event of Russia’s month-long chairmanship will be an open ministerial meeting on maintaining peace and security, resolution of conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa and the fight against the terrorist threat," Zakharova said. "It will take place on September 30." The diplomat added that that the relevance of this topic could hardly be questioned.
