World must reconsider rules governing armed conflicts — Putin

According to the Russian president, the world wars seemed to have nullified the achievements of humanitarian law

MOSCOW, October 1. /TASS/. The world must once again address the rules governing armed conflicts, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club.

"Once, at the very end of the 19th century, in 1899, it was Russia that initiated the Hague Convention, which for the first time established rules of warfare, the peaceful settlement of disputes and efforts to make hostilities more humane. Of course, the sound and noble ideas laid down at the time did not spare humanity the upheavals of the 20th century. The world wars seemed to have nullified the achievements of humanitarian law. But the time has now come to once again raise the issue of rules governing armed conflicts," Putin noted.
