The Astana Syrian peace process was initiated by Russia, Turkey and Iran

MOSCOW, January 19. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed in a telephone conversation with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi the ongoing developments in Syria and they both pointed out to the importance of the Astana process implementation that is employed as a mechanism to settle the situation in the Arab republic, the Kremlin press office said in a statement on Thursday.

"The situation in Syria was discussed. [Presidents] also pointed to the importance of maintaining close coordination within the framework of the Astana process, which is a key mechanism aimed at the provision for the Syrian conflict settlement," the statement added.

The Astana Syrian peace process was initiated by Russia, Turkey and Iran. The three countries are the guarantors of the peace settlement to the Syrian conflict between Damascus and the Syrian opposition. Talks in this format kicked off in January 2017 in Kazakhstan’s capital of Astana.
