UNITED NATIONS, October 27./TASS/. Russia calls on the West to stop considering outer space as an arena for conflicts between states, Konstantin Vorontsov, deputy director at the Russian Foreign Ministry’s department for arms nonproliferation and control, said at a meeting of the UN General Assembly First Committee on Wednesday.
"We call on Western countries to stop trying to position outer space as a new arena of rivalry and conflicts of states," the diplomat said.
"The implementation of the US-led Western countries’ plans of weapons deployment in outer space and the use of space for combat operations geared to win dominance and superiority bears a serious threat," he said. "Such actions have the most negative impact on global peace and security and are fraught with a dramatic destabilization of the situation and an arms race in outer space, which would break down arms reduction perspectives in general.".
