Russia strongly condemns new shelling of Bushehr NPP — Foreign Ministry

Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said earlier that the global community reacted with concern to the strike near the Bushehr NPP

MOSCOW, April 4. /TASS/. Moscow strongly condemns new missile shelling of the Bushehr nuclear power plant (NPP) that resulted in casualties, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

"We are receiving with growing concern reports about new missile shelling of the Bushehr nuclear power plant that took place on April 4. We are studying the incoming information on this matter. We strongly condemn this crime, which resulted in casualties," the diplomat said. "We express our condolences over the death of one of the plant’s employees, who, as far as is known, was responsible for ensuring physical security," she added.

Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said earlier that the global community reacted with concern to the strike near the Bushehr NPP.

"Overall, the global community, of course, reacted with concern to what happened. The Director General of the IAEA spoke out, and a number of our contacts with our partners, phone calls and emails indicate growing concern. Everyone is very alarmed by the trend toward escalation," the Rosatom chief said.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran reported on Saturday that another strike had been carried out near the Bushehr nuclear power plant. A projectile fell near the plant’s territory, killing one of the nuclear facility’s security guards, but the main facilities were not damaged. The International Atomic Energy Agency, commenting on the incident, noted that strikes on nuclear power plant sites and adjacent areas are unacceptable, as equipment critical to ensuring nuclear safety is located there.
