Hainan's Yangpu Port handled more than 1.83 million containers in 2023

The port's cargo turnover exceeded 58 million tons, increasing by 8.56%

HAIKOU /China/, January 11. /TASS/. The Yangpu Deep Sea Port on the northwest coast of Hainan Island received more than 1.83 million standard containers in 2023, increasing their turnover by 3.75%. This was reported by Hainan Daily newspaper with reference to local authorities.

According to the publication, Yangpu's cargo turnover exceeded 58 million tons in 12 months, up 8.56%. The port continues to carry out duty-free refueling and registration of floating structures. It has already registered 43 international vessels with a total cargo capacity of more than 5.3 million tons, a figure that ranks second in the PRC.

Last year Yangpu was noted to have opened five shipping routes, resulting in 45 maritime trade routes passing through it. In fact, the port is connected to all coastal cities in China and key harbors in Southeast Asia. It is involved in intercontinental transportation in the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

The management of this facility drives active infrastructure construction, taking into account the advantages of the free trade port developed in Hainan, the paper stated. This includes a project to increase the throughput capacity of Yangpu: it is set to increase by 3.4 million standard containers in the near future. At the first stage, investments in the project amounted to 6.11 billion yuan (approximately $860 billion at current exchange rates).

This year, the port administration plans to complete the formation of fairways designed for container ships capable of carrying up to 200,000 tons of cargo. After completing the construction of berths, Yangpu will fully meet the standards of harbors equipped for the needs of the largest merchant ships.

In 2024, Yangpu also plans to attract government investment of 770 million yuan (about $108 million) for the construction of grain and oil terminals. They will have a throughput capacity of 4.5 million tons. After modernization, the port will be able to receive tankers equipped to transport more than 50,000 tons of relevant raw materials. By 2027, it is also planned to expand the LNG receiving station, which will allow up to 6 million tons of this energy carrier to be brought into the port annually.

Hainan's key deep-water harbor

Yangpu is located within the city of Danzhou, under direct administrative control of the provincial government. The port accounts for a significant proportion of Hainan's external trade turnover and the foreign investment it attracts.

This industrial zone of advanced economic development plays an important role in the development of a single highly efficient transportation network of the PRC; according to the Chinese government's plan, by 2035 Yangpu will become a key hub for distributing the flow of goods from different regions of the country to Southeast Asia and Oceania, to Europe and North America.
