Disruption in Facebook operation not caused by hacker attack, US official says

"It was really a configuration error, it was a technology outage," Easterly noted

WASHINGTON, October 5. /TASS/. The disruption in Facebook services (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and others) was not caused by a hacker attack, but US authorities watched the situation in case it was a "major cyber incident," Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Director Jen Easterly said in an interview for the Washington Post.

"From everything that I have seen, this was not any sort of malicious attack or hack. It was really a configuration error, it was a technology outage," Easterly noted.

She underscored that CISA, which is a part of the Department of Homeland Security, watched the situation unfolding.

"Because if it had been some sort of a major cyber incident, we wanted to make sure that we were keeping an eye on all other critical infrastructure that could be impacted as well," CISA head said.
