Russian T-90, T-80 main battle tanks to feature new reactive armor, says defense firm

The Russian-made Arena suite comprises a highly jam-resistant multi-functional target detection radar

MOSCOW, April 5. /TASS/. Russian T-90 and T-80 main battle tanks will be outfitted with the Arena-M new reactive armor, High Precision Systems Group within the state tech corporation Rostec told TASS on Wednesday.

"Eventually, the Arena-M will be installed on T-90 and T-80 tanks," the Group said. Russia’s other armor can also be outfitted with the Arena-M suite, it added.

"For this purpose, upgrade has to be carried out based on the armor’s specifics," the Group stressed.

Foreign customers have also displayed their interest in the Arena-M reactive armor suite. However, the Group sees its main task in meeting the requirements of the Russian Army and arranging the Arena-M mass production, it said.

The Arena-M reactive armor suite engineered by the Machine-Building Design Bureau is the system mounted on the combat vehicle to shield it against anti-tank grenades and anti-tank missiles. In particular, the Russian-made Arena suite comprises a highly jam-resistant multi-functional target detection radar. The reactive armor suite employs focused instant-effect protection munitions placed in special silos around the tank’s turret.
