Latest diesel-electric sub built for Russian Pacific Fleet arrives in Vladivostok

The Magadan is the Pacific Fleet’s third diesel-electric submarine capable of carrying Kalibr high-precision cruise missiles

VLADIVOSTOK, October 9. /TASS/. The latest diesel-electric submarine Magadan built for Russia’s Pacific Fleet completed its inter-fleet transit from the Baltic Fleet and arrived at its permanent base in Vladivostok, the Fleet’s press office reported on Sunday.

"The Pacific Fleet’s Project 636.3 submarine Magadan arrived for the first time at its home base in Vladivostok. A welcome ceremony was held in a submarine formation of the Primorye Flotilla of All-Arms Forces on the occasion of the submarine’s arrival. The submarine completed its inter-fleet passage from the Baltic to the Pacific Fleet through the Northern Sea Route, covering a distance of over 9,000 nautical miles," the press office said in a statement.

The submarine was welcomed by the Fleet’s military command, personnel, the relatives of the crew and representatives of the Shipyard where the sub had been built. After a short rest, the submarine’s crew will begin accomplishing planned combat training tasks within the Pacific Fleet’s submarine forces, the press office said.

The Magadan is the Pacific Fleet’s third diesel-electric submarine capable of carrying Kalibr high-precision cruise missiles. The submarine was accepted for service in the Pacific Fleet in St. Petersburg in October last year.

Project 636.3 submarines (NATO reporting name: Improved Kilo-II) are 74 meters long and displace more than 3,900 tons. Due to its strong hull, the submarine has an operational depth of 240 meters and can dive to a maximum depth of 300 meters. Submarines of this Project have an operational range of up to 7,500 miles. They are armed with Kalibr-PL cruise missiles that are launched from torpedo tubes from the sub’s submerged position.
