Russian Interior Ministry warns cyber crimes skyrocketing

The ministry recalled that the cybercrime rate had seen a 16-fold surge in recent years

MOSCOW, March 25. /TASS/. Cyber crime in Russia has skyrocketed 16-fold over the past few years, Russia’s Minister of Internal Affairs Alexander Kolokoltsev stated at a Ministry’s Social Council meeting on Monday.

"In the last few years Internet crime has seen a 16-fold surge. This number is huge, despite the fact that crime in general is subsiding, felonies included. It’s precisely here, where we can concentrate and unite our efforts," he said.

The top official also stressed that over the last year the number of crimes committed using modern telecommunication technology surged by 92%. "This demonstrates that we have failed to explain to the most vulnerable groups of citizens the dangers that fraudulent schemes on the Internet pose," Kolokoltsev pointed out.
