German justice ministry seeking grounds to bank AfD party — minister

Stefanie Hubig plans to set up a special working group to collect and evaluate relevant materials

BERLIN, November 8. /TASS/. Germany’s justice ministry is working to determine whether there are grounds to ban the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Minister Stefanie Hubig said.

"I am convinced that that we must now seriously and systematically examine whether there are grounds for this ban," she told the Neue Osnabrucker Zeitung newspaper, commenting on a possibility of designating the AfD’s activitiy as "anti-constitutional."

According to Hubig, she plans to set up a special working group to collect and evaluate relevant materials. "A political and legal decision on the ban will be made on this basis," she added.

AfD is currently Germany’s most popular party. According to the INSA opinion poll of November 7, the party ranks 1st among the country’s political forces in public opinion polls with 29% of the vote, outstripping the conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) by 10 percentage points (p.p.).
