Global powers to discuss Transnistrian issue without Chisinau — Moldovan PM

According to Vasile Tofan, this issue will certainly be discussed if negotiations on a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine take place

CHISINAU, November 6. /TASS/. Global powers will not invite Chisinau when they discuss the Transnistrian issue in the context of settling the Ukrainian conflict, Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said.

"We won't be at that negotiating table. Moldova is a small country, and we shouldn't harbor any illusions. But Washington and Brussels do care about how the Transnistria issue is resolved," he told TV-8.

According to Tofan, this issue "will certainly be discussed if negotiations on a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine take place."

Negotiations on the conflict’s peaceful settlement known as the 5+2 format, involving Moldova, Transnistria, the OSCE, Russia, and Ukraine, and observers from the European Union and the United States, have been frozen since 2019. President of the unrecognized republic Vadim Krasnoselsky has repeatedly called on the Moldovan leadership to resume these talks but Sandu has refused to meet with him since she took office in 2020. After Ukraine closed its border with Transnistria, Chisinau switched from talks to using pressure. Both the Russian Foreign Ministry and the OSCE, which has acknowledged that the escalation between the two Dniester banks stems from the lack of dialogue, have been calling for talks.
