Several rockets land near US consulate in northern Iraq — media

CAIRO, March 13. /TASS/. Several rockets landed near the US Consulate General in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil, the National Iraqi News Agency reported early on Sunday.

According to the report, at least three blasts were heard in the city in the early hours of Sunday. Air raid sirens went off. The airport of Erbil, the administrative center of Iraqi Kurdistan, suspended its work. Civilian air traffic in the region also stopped.

According to Erbil Governor Omid Khoshnaw, no casualties were reported as a result of the attack. Local authorities have launched an inquiry.

The US Embassy in Baghdad tightened its security in connection with the incident. The diplomatic mission’s territory was closed.

Reuters reported, citing an unnamed US official, that there were no casualties among US servicemen in the area.

The Rudaw television reported that at least 14 rockets were fired towards the area housing the US Consulate General. The projectiles landed in the vicinity of the diplomatic building and in the locality of Mela Omer.

"We will find out who was responsible for this terror attack very soon. The situation in Erbil is under control. The office of the Kurdistan-24 television was seriously damaged, but there were no causalties," the Erbil governor said.
