Russian Security Council proposes ways to counter Starlink, OneWeb threats

Russia must accelerate the production of its own spacecraft, an expert panel of the Russian Security Council said

MOSCOW, November 6. /TASS/. Western satellite communication services such as Starlink and OneWeb pose a risk of destabilizing sovereign states, therefore, Russia must accelerate the production of its own spacecraft, an expert panel of the Russian Security Council said.

They arrived at this conclusion at a meeting of the Presidium of the Security Council’s Scientific Advisory Board, which focused on the use of a domestic low-orbit satellite communication and Internet access system to ensure Russia’s information security.

"The meeting identified key risks and threats associated with the use of Western space-based communication systems over the territories of sovereign states to destabilize the socio-political situation. This primarily concerns widely used satellite communication services like Starlink and OneWeb, which are actively expanding into countries interested in the rapid digitalization of their national economies," the Security Council’s press service said following the meeting.

According to the press service, the meeting participants "examined in detail the potential and prospects for the international use of a Russian satellite communication system, which is being developed in full compliance with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) regulations and the requirements of national legislation." "To accelerate the development of this system, it is essential to expand the serial production of communication satellites and terminal equipment," they noted.

"The authorized government bodies have been advised to prepare proposals on measures to ensure the full-scale deployment and stable operation of the system," the press service emphasized.
