What is known about Il-76 crash in Russia’s Ivanovo Region

The plane was taking off for a routine flight when one of its engines caught fire

MOSCOW, March 12. /TASS/. An Ilyushin Il-76 military cargo plane crashed during takeoff in Russia’s Ivanovo Region, the Defense Ministry reported. A fire broke out at the crash site, but it has already been extinguished.

According to the ministry, one of the plane’s engines caught fire. Fifteen people were on board, their fate is still unknown.

TASS has compiled the most important information about the incident.

Circumstances of crash

- The Il-76 plane crashed in the Ivanovo Region at about 1:00 p.m. Moscow time (10:00 a.m. GMT) on March 12. The plane was taking off for a routine flight when one of its engines caught fire.

- The plane crashed near the village of Bogorodskoye, an eyewitness told TASS.

- The cause of the fire is yet unknown. A commission of the Russian Aerospace Forces flew to Ivanovo to probe into the incident, the Defense Ministry said.

Crew and passengers

- The plane was carrying eight crew members and seven passengers. The ministry did not provide any information about their fate.

- Emergency services told TASS that according to preliminary information, all those on board the plane died. Later, Ivanovo Region Governor Stanislav Voskresensky expressed his condolences to the families of the dead pilots and ordered to provide them with all necessary assistance

No consequences on ground

- According to eyewitnesses, the Il-76 crash caused no damage on the ground. The regional head later confirmed that there was no damage in any of the nearby settlements.

- A fire broke out at the crash site, but it was later extinguished.

Previous incidents

- This is the second Il-76 crash since the beginning of the year. On January 24, 2024, the Ukrainian armed forces downed a plane carrying 74 people, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war. They all died.

- Another crash took place on June 24, 2022 in Ryazan. Then, five people died and four others were injured. The reason for the incident was an engine failure.
