Ban on mining reduces load on Siberian power grid by over 300 MW

The Energy Ministry also reported that it plans to create a directory of cryptocurrency mining equipment

MOSCOW, February 20. /TASS/. The ban on cryptocurrency mining in several Russian regions has already reduced the load on the Siberian power grid by more than 300 MW, the Ministry of Energy said.

"Thanks to the ban, the load on the Siberian power grid has decreased by more than 300 MW and it was possible to avoid restrictions," the ministry said.

The Energy Ministry also reported that it plans to create a directory of cryptocurrency mining equipment.

The Russian government has approved a list of regions and territories where mining will be banned from January 1, 2025, to March 15, 2031. Restrictions have been introduced in Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

In addition, mining is banned in some areas of the Irkutsk Region, Buryatia, and the Zabaykalsky region during peak energy consumption periods. In 2025 they will in effect from January 1 to March 15, and in the following years - from November 15 to March 15.
